Most Powerful 4-Stroke KX250 To Date

The KX design philosophy – to put mid-level to expert riders on the top step of the podium – has not changed since the brand was launched over 40 years ago. Designed to continue its history of winning – in the extremely competitive 4-stroke 250cc class Kawasaki race machines have the most AMA Supercross and Motocross titles – the 2020 model KX250 features a new engine with increased power, an even more potent high-rpm range, and a higher rev limit. Complemented by a lightweight, well-balanced chassis with a new fork and stronger brakes, this performance advantage translates to quicker lap times, making it the quickest KX250 to date.

Factory-Style Engine Components and Tuning

Highly acclaimed for its high output and smooth power delivery, the 2020 KX250’s new engine features even stronger high-rpm focused performance and increased power. New bore and stroke offer the space for larger intake and exhaust valves, while finger-follower valve actuation like the KX450 enables a higher rev limit and more aggressive cams. Dual injectors, downdraft-style intake, and race-inspired tuning and parts add to performance.

More-Race-Winning High-RPM Power

The new engine boasts an increase in peak power of approximately 2.4 kW (3.3 PS), and performance focused on the high-rpm range. The stronger high-rpm performance, easily noticeable from 10,000 min-1, gives riders an advantage on the straights, and, when combined with a higher rev limit, makes it easier to tie corners together for quicker lap times.

Revised Bore and Stroke

The new engine features a short-stroke configuration, with bore and stroke measuring 78.0 × 52.2 mm. Thanks to the wider bore, larger intake and exhaust valves can be used, enabling greater flow for increased high-rpm performance. Likewise, the shorter stroke lends itself to the high-rpm focused engine character.

Finger-follower Valve Actuation

Like the KX450, the KX250 features a valve train designed by Kawasaki’s World Superbike engineers. Finger-follower valve actuation enables a higher rev limit (increased 500 min-1), and more aggressive cams for harder-hitting power.

Dual Injectors

The KX250 is the only production motocrosser with dual injectors (a feature since 2012): an injector downstream of the throttle valve (where injectors are located on standard FI systems), tasked with delivering smooth, instant response; and a second, upstream injector located close to the airbox, which makes a significant contribution to engine output at high rpm.

Factory-Inspired Tuning

Works-base bridged-box bottom piston is just one of many features inspired by our factory racers.

Easy engine tuning: DFI Setting Data Selection (3 map choices)

Adjusting engine settings to suit conditions has never been easier when using the KX’s FI couplers. Plug-and-play style system is quick, easy and stress-free. Instead of a single engine map, the ECU features three (four, counting the Launch Control Mode maps). Initial settings for the three maps are: Standard (conditions)(green), Hard (conditions)(black) and Soft (conditions)(white). FI couplers, enables riders to easily switch between the three maps to suit riding conditions. Each of the three maps can be reprogrammed using the optional KX FI Calibration Kit.

Precision engine tuning: KX FI Calibration Kit (Accessory)

KX FI Calibration Kit features a handheld Calibration tool with colour LCD screen, enables riders to make changes to the engine maps by plugging into the ECU without needing a PC or battery. It comes with seven preset maps, transfer and diagnostic cables, SD memory card, user manual and a carrying case. Ask you Authorised Kawasaki Dealer for more information on this option.

The Holeshot Advantage: Launch Control Mode

The KX250 features a launch control system similar to that on our factory racers. With the simple press of a button, riders can activate a separate engine map designed to ensure efficient race starts in slippery conditions. The Launch Control Mode map retards ignition timing, allowing tyres to gain grip in low traction situations. Launch Control Mode has the greatest effect within the first few seconds of releasing the clutch off the start. This is the most crucial time for the rider to get ahead of their rivals and line up the first corner.

Launch Control Mode

To activate the Launch Control Mode riders depress the launch control button (for 2 seconds) located at the left handle. when activated the light next to the button will flash quickly to let the rider know it is on. Launch Control Mode works in 1st and 2nd gear. Once the rider shifts into 3rd gear, the system is automatically disengaged, switching back to the normal engine mapping.

Slim Aluminium Perimeter Frame

Already a very high-level frame, minor rigidity balance tweaking, care of new lower front engine mounts contributes to an improved ability to soak up bumps.

Stronger Brakes

A larger-diameter o250 mm rear disc complements the oversized o270 mm front disc, delivering stronger stopping power. New front brake pad material offers increased controllability.

Slim, Ergonomic Bodywork

The narrow frame and minimalistic bodywork offer a slim riding position that facilitates control. A low, flat tank/seat design makes it easier to sit farther forward, and long, smooth surfaces make it easy to slide back and forth.

Adjustable Ergonomics

A choice of four handlebar positions and two footpeg positions allows riders to tailor their riding position to suit body size and preference.
